Impulse
Detailed Description:
Impulse (from Latin pellere, "to push, drive") is a fundamental physical quantity that characterizes the mechanical state of motion of a physical object. The faster a body moves and the more massive it is, the greater its impulse. Impulse thus represents what is loosely referred to in colloquial language as "momentum" and "force." In acoustics/room acoustics, an alarm pistol is often used as an impulse generator. The bang triggered by the pistol excites a closed room, allowing the actual condition (= reverberation) to be determined in terms of room acoustics. This reverberation time across the entire frequency spectrum from 125 Hz to 4 kHz (octave bands) can be used to draw conclusions about the absorption behavior of the existing room. In most cases, the rooms measured are inadequately equipped in terms of absorption.
