Acoustic solutions for conference rooms

Conference rooms are primarily used for meetings. This means that, unlike offices, good audibility over long distances is crucial. Conference rooms are therefore considered comparable to rooms in educational establishments in accordance with ASR A3.7 and DIN 18041. The required reverberation time for these rooms is 0.57 seconds in the speech frequency range from 250 to 2,000 Hz, depending on the room volume. A tolerance of ±20% (0.46 to 0.68 seconds) is permissible.

The acoustic measures should aim to achieve optimum speech intelligibility at the furthest seat with minimal listening effort.

Solution option 1

Carpeted flooring is already in place – all other boundary surfaces are sound-reflective

Acoustic values
  • Sound pressure level at the position furthest away from the speaker: 55 dB(A)
  • Speech transmission index STI: 0.56
  • Reverberation time in the speech frequency range 250 to 2,000 Hz: 1.6 to 0.9 sec.
Assessment

The reverberation time does not comply with the requirements of ASR A3.7. Speech intelligibility is within the acceptable range. The long reverberation times may result in increased listening effort.

Solution option 2

Full-surface acoustic ceiling in addition to carpet flooring

Acoustic values
  • Sound pressure level at the position furthest away from the speaker: 49 dB(A)
  • Speech transmission index STI: 0.68
  • Reverb time in the speech frequency range 250 to 2,000 Hz: 0.6 to 0.5
Assessment

The reverberation time complies with the requirements of ASR A3.7 and the speech intelligibility is good at almost 0.7. This means that even the listener furthest away can participate in the meeting and follow the conversation without having to strain to hear. This example clearly shows that speech intelligibility does not depend on the sound pressure level. If the room is also to be used for video conferences, a lower reverberation time may be beneficial for clear speech transmission.
